Is there a car brand that you believe just should not belong on this Earth? A car brand that makes no cars you lust after even if others do? What car brand do you irrationally dislike?

For me it has to be VW. I have never liked the Beetle or the Bus. I can appreciate them and understand why others might like the but for me VW has never made a single car I thought to be appealing. It isn’t like I hate the Golf GTI or even a Beetle but they just seem emotionless to me.

Nissan. I don’t care for S-chassis. I don’t care for Skylines and I especially don’t care for the GT-R, too expensive for the badge. “I drive a £100k Nissan” doesn’t sounds as impressive as an Aston Martin or Porsche.

I hate Tesla.

The cars are fine, but the cult of personality around elon musk is annoying to no end. It seems in every story there are comments that believe that Elon musk is an engineering savant who is hand spooling the electric motors.

No. He’s a successful entrepreneur who is reinvesting his paypal fortunes into interesting fields. He’s not tinkering with rockets in his spare time, he’s just funding the people that do.

I am the kind of American who likes big cars so I am not sure I would care for the Polo. The VW Polo, Golf, etc seem like nice cars but they just seem pretty bland to me.

Honestly, I don’t think so. I guess I could say Lexus, but even then I’m just more annoyed by their owners. I don’t rule out any manufacturer, even if I’ve had a bad car from them.

I don’t like VW either, never have. And especially when they cheaped out hard on new models. Toyota may be boring AF, but at least they are reliable. VW succeeds at boring and fails at reliability.
The whole “German Engineering” campaign tricked so many people.

As a brand I hate Ferrari (the old cars are nice but WAY over priced) because they are such a-holes and the cars aren’t anything special really, sure they are fast and all but meh.

But I think Mitsubishi wins out. None of their cars appeals to me, a Lancer or an Evolution X at a push but the Mirage, i-MiEV, ASX, Outlander, L200 or Shogun.

Their cars I don’t really have anthing to say about. They’re about as vanilla as it gets for sportcars, nothing special. As a company though they have done some unbelievably shitty thing s that are outright unforgivable if you ask me. The people in charge of the prancing horse these days need to just roll over and die already.

Mitsubishi. I’ve tangled with a few too many 3000GTs and Eclipses, and I really dislike working on them. Evos are fun to drive though, and I don’t mind Monteros.

I don’t hate Mercedes cars, but I could never see myself in one for two pretty irrational reasons, both stemming from my days as a valet. 1. I just have this made up image of the most entitled “Uncle Tom” white dudes driving them around just smelling like stale farts and bad breath. 2. Mercedes drivers we’re the worst tippers by a long shot, sure a lot of people with expensive cars don’t tip well but at the restaurant where I worked, the Merc guys would not tip and then get pissed that their car was not parked in VIP (up front).

You know those crazy religious people that go out on the streets to warn people of the impending “End time”? ... I’m the crazy VW guy. I’ve told people for years that VW is evil. Their Golf becoming car of the year two years after it was released, Their commercials where their cars are suddenly rear wheel drive doing power slides with the rear wheels, how ‘German engineering’ is anything but a selling point, About the people who buy a Passat but have to pay exuberant maintenance and parts prices because they built it using an Audi platform, How their diesels are dirty and just evolved 1970’s Rabbit motors, How they obviously paid off AutoGuide and others for good reviews, how their cars that are given to journalists have decorative trim covering up exposed bits but that trim is not found on cars they sell to the public. How they have been giving trim options to journalists that can’t be specked that way at the dealership. When the end time comes man! I said it and everyone said I was crazy. Now half a million cars are being recalled. Likely more. VW (no joke) said they wanted to dominate US sales and the’ve been cheating left and right to do it. I felt like a crazy conspiracy guy and I likely still am. I have an irrational hate for VW.

Between the abysmal quality of their cars from the 70s-00s and the safety-related recalls they’ve been forced into lately, I have nothing but contempt for the company no matter how cool some of their cars are.

And as a Michigander, I feel they’ve betrayed the people who made them great and were loyal to them through hard times.

My irrational hatred is for modern Bentley, normally I would be psyched to get into their cars because I like comfortable things. But Bentley got rid of all of their interesting cars, and what were left with are overpriced Audis that look ugly and are only designed to appeal to people with more money than taste. Think of it like this, Rolls Royce is the gentlemanly old money oil plutocrat, while Bentley is his drunken cousin that makes an ass of himself and can get away with his behavior because he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

You might be right with the Continental but I think the Mulsanne is a great embodiment of a Bentley. I actually think they are doing better after the Rolls Royce divorce

You may have a point there, but whenever I look at the Mulsanne, it just doesn’t do it for me. Because inevitably, I think of the Arnage, one of the best cars to come out of Bentley and recent years and one of the best looking cars from that matter, than I look at the Mulsanne and I get all depressed that it’s the successor. I don’t know, I certainly can understand the appeal of the Mulsanne, but the styling just really doesn’t do it for me, especially considering I could have the RR Ghost for roughly the same price.

But the RR Ghost is on the same chassis as a 7 Series and the Mulsanne is unique. The Arnage never really did it for me. But I like the Brooklands

Fair point on the chassis, but it’s not that big a deal for me because I look at the Ghost and it’s 7-series chassis as sort of how the Toronado and Eldorado were back in the 60s, same basic bones, but enough differentiation to not be so obvious.

The Brooklands was just monstrous, I still can’t picture that thing without Jeremy Clarkson shredding both rear tires into little strips of rubber.

I blame that on automated mass production. Maybe with some advanced fab techniques, we can get back to smaller manufacturing runs that allow new designs but still make money. Now, it’s got to max out the capital equipment return by appealing to the greatest number of people - and unique design goes into the toilet with that criteria.
